Since most people are unfamiliar with what the "formant" component of the human voice is, here are the details. Human voices consist of two components. One is fundamental waves that are pitch-sensitive and the other is non pitch-sensitive fixed harmonics. The harmonics components that change along with with vocal cords and with the physical shape of the vocal tract add distinctive characteristics to person's voice and are caller formants. All of the other telephone voice changers on the market today strictly pitch shifters, not addressing the critical formant control component of the human voice. They change formants when they alter pitch, so the voice that are pitched higher sound like "Mickey Mouse" and voice that are pitched higher sound like "Mickey Mouse". With the Voice Transformer's pitch slider, you can control pitch independently, without making formants change, while its formant slider works to effectively control the vocal cords and shape of the vocal tract. So it can change a male voice into a female or even a child's voice, yet sound completely natural.

The "Bare Bones" Truth About Voice Changers (Our Humble Opinion)

How Do "Voice Changers" Work?
The vast majority of "voice changers" shift the pitch-sensitive fundamental waves of the users voice (via microprocessor) and offer various pitch shift options. "Low end" models offer less pitch options and use a less effective (and lower cost ) microprocessor than "high end" models. Since pitch is only one element of the human voice, there are limitations as to how much change can be made without resulting in an "unnatural" or "digital" sounding voice. High end (Pro) models use additional electronic circuits to offset or buffer the unnatural sounds as well as more efficient pitch shifting microprocessors . Lower end models are generally for use as a novelty item for practical jokes or for kids. (Kids love them as gifts) If you have a serious application, consider only the "Pro" models.

Can I Really Change A Female Voice To a Male Voice And Vice Versa?
I'm glad you asked that question. The answer however, is not so simple. Since everyone's voice is different, everyone's result when using a voice changer is somewhat different. Generally speaking, a voice changer can increase or decrease the pitch of your voice by one or two octaves while maintaining a realistic sounding result. They do, in fact, a very efficient job of disguising your voice even to people who know you well. Most people can find two or three settings on the voice changer that, with a little practice, can have amazing results. The more selection options the voice changer offers, the better the results and the more "voices" you can effectively use. However, for a typical male voice to sound like a typical female voice or vice versa, you must change the voice by several octaves. This usually results in a voice sounding like Mickey Mouse or Darth Vader. The same applies to a child to adult sound and adult to child sound. On the other hand, some customers have reported good results in "gender" changing. We believe this to be rare exceptions to the rule, however.

So, Which One Should I Purchase?
Man, you just keep on asking the hard questions! It all depends on the application, the type of phone you plan to use it with, and how much you want to spend. I was afraid you were going to ask! The New Voice "transformer" is a "horse of a different color", "a new dog", and very different from a voice "changer". Here is a simplified explanation, for more details, click on product in our "Voice Changers" menu.

The Voice Transformer addresses not only the pitch, but also the "formant" element of the human voice. "Formants" are non pitch-sensitive fixed harmonics that change along with vocal cords and the physical shape of the vocal tract to add distinctive characteristics to a person's voice. Got That? The Voice Transformer also give you control of timbre, tone, and even reverberation (In case you want someone to think you are in church when you are actually having Sunday morning "brunch" with your neighbor's wife!-Just kidding, of course).
